Kerala's backwaters is the most popular tourist attraction of Kerala. The total expanse of backwater stretches over 1500kms, with a network of 44 rivers, lagoons and lakes from north to south. Allepey which forms the main part of this network has the peculiar geographical feature of having the water in level with the land. This gives the advantage of getting a closer look at the village life on shore while on a backwater ride. The intricate network of canals through this town has earned it the sobriquet "The Venice of the East".
The most interesting area in the backwaters is the Kuttanad region, called the rice bowl of Kerala. The area is probably the only place in the continent where farming is done below sea level, using a system of dykes and bunds.
The largest backwater stretch is the Vembanad Lake, which opens out into the sea at the Kochi port and flows through three districts - Alappuzha, Kottayam and Kochi. The Ashtamudi Lake has eight 'arms' covering a major portion of Kollam district in the south, and is the second largest lake in the state.

Cochin - 'Queen of Arabian Sea': It is not known exactly how the name Kochi originated. But many theories exist. Some historians believe that Cochin is a modified form of the word 'Cochazhi' which in Malayalam means 'small sea'.
St. Francis Church: It is the oldest church built by European in India. On his 3rd visit to Kerala, 'Vasco da Gama', the Portuguese trader who reached India from Europe by sea, fell ill and died in Kochi. He was buried in the St. Francis Church. Later his remains were taken back to Portugal. Also the exact place where he was buried has been marked out inside the church.
Chinese Fishing Nets / Fort Kochi beach: A stroll along the beach, particularly at sunset with the Chinese fishing nets and sailing ships in the background, is a fine experience. It is believed that traders from the court of the Chinese ruler Kublai Khan introduced these nets here. Many European style bungalows can be seen along the shoreline.
Dutch Palace: The Palace was originally built by the Portuguese. Later, in 17th century, the Dutch modified it and presented to the Raja of Kochi. The place has a fine collection of mural paintings depicting the scenes from the Hindu epics Mahabharata and Ramayana.
